Overview
History Drive-By is a road-trip companion that streams narrated historical points of interest along your route. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and what we do not do with it.
Location data
The app uses your device's GPS to generate a driving route and identify nearby points of interest. Location is used only while you are actively planning or driving a route:
- Your precise coordinates are sent to our backend solely to compute a driving route and fetch nearby historical content.
- We do not store your GPS coordinates on our servers after the route is generated.
- We do not track your location in the background or outside of active drive sessions.
Account data
To use History Drive-By you create an account with an email address and username. We store these credentials securely in order to authenticate you and associate your logbook with your account.
- Passwords are stored as salted hashes — we never have access to your plaintext password.
- We do not collect payment information directly; any future billing is handled by a third-party processor under their own privacy terms.
Drive history
Completed drives (route name, date, mileage, and stops visited) are stored locally on your device in your Logbook. This data is not uploaded to or stored on our servers unless you explicitly use a future sync feature, which will be disclosed separately.
How we use your data
We use the data we collect only to:
- Generate your driving route and stream narrated POIs during a drive session.
- Authenticate you and protect your account.
- Diagnose errors and improve the reliability of the service (server-side logs contain anonymized request metadata, not your location).
What we do not do
- We do not sell your personal data to third parties.
- We do not share your data with advertisers.
- We do not build behavioral profiles for advertising purposes.
- We do not use your data to train machine learning models.
Third-party services
Route generation and geocoding are powered by third-party mapping APIs. Historical content is sourced from publicly available databases (Wikipedia, Wikidata, the National Register of Historic Places). These services may receive a query containing origin and destination city names but do not receive your device's precise GPS coordinates directly.
Data retention
Account information is retained for as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us at the address below. Route session data is not retained on our servers beyond the duration of a single drive session.
Children's privacy
History Drive-By is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe we have inadvertently done so, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the effective date at the top of this page. Continued use of the app after changes constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
